With a big emphasis on the new generation of social media users (Gen Z), it looks as though older generations (born before 1995 – we’re not actually that old!) are trying to set an example of what is real across social platforms, and steering away from filters or heavily edited photos/videos.
Although filters are looking to be on the decline, that doesn’t mean the same for creativity. Businesses as well as individual users are trying to be more creative with their social media content.
Whilst the trends of 2022 will continue into 2023, let’s take a look at some other trends that could be big in 2023.
Have you noticed your LinkedIn feed to be looking a little more like a Facebook feed? No, we aren’t talking about the layout, we’re talking about the types of posts being shared across the platform.
Long gone are the days when LinkedIn was used purely for posting jobs and advertising businesses. Now people are getting more personal by sharing experiences, ideas, and thoughts on their profiles, which ultimately seems to be sparking more conversations and engagement.
There also seems to be a shift in LinkedIn’s algorithm, with posts without links outperforming posts with links, which could potentially be their way of getting a user to stay on the platform.
We aren’t saying that businesses need to post every little aspect of personal details, but it’s worth an idea to create or join in with conversations, and share the human side of a business.
Have you heard of BeReal yet? If you haven’t then you will probably see it everywhere now. BeReal originally launched in 2019 but exploded in popularity in 2022, rising to be the number one social networking app downloaded on App store in October 2022 with roughly 29.5 million downloads.
The photo-sharing social platform takes a new spin on posting photos, prompting users to upload a photo in the moment and with no editing. Users receive a notification to tell them to take a photo including a selfie image and their surroundings.
BeReal doesn’t include a business feature (yet??), and while the app’s main audience consists of those under 25yrs, who knows where the app will go in 2023, but as of right now, it’s the app on people’s minds and as the downloads continue to rise, could BeReal develop into a platform that can be used for business purposes too?
According to research, around 40% of 16-44 year-olds are now using social media platforms as their primary search engines. Whether it be searching for the latest products or researching trending news, social media channels such as TikTok, appear to be the go-to when people are searching the web.
Just like you would do some keyword research for your website, it’s time to start doing some keyword research for your social strategy and including these keywords in your social channels and content – NOT just using them as hashtags.
These keywords can be used within your bios and captions, helping not only your posts to be found, but your social pages themselves too.
It comes as no surprise that over 80% of social media users watch video content on silent, especially whilst in public places. This fills the need for video captions, enticing the viewer to watch a video in full.
Captions aren’t just beneficial for ranking up views though, they increase accessibility and inclusion for those who are hearing impaired, and they can also help with visibility and search if keywords are used within the captions.
Writing captions for your videos can be a little time-consuming, but now they are becoming more of a default option, social media channels such as TikTok and Facebook, give the option of auto-generated captions (just be sure to check the captions are correct, as you wouldn’t want a Peter Kay, Misheard lyrics scenario!)
